Microsoft Project is one of the finest project management software developed and sold by Microsoft. This software is designed to help project managers to develop their plans, assign resources to tasks, track the progress, manage budgets, analyze workloads and much more.
Microsoft has various editions in its Office software collection. Microsoft Project and MS Project Server Edition are the one of the most appealing feature and are the cornerstones of the Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management (EPM) product.
Microsoft has revealed that the next version of Microsoft Project will be featuring the Fluent user interface. The Fluent User interface is also rumored to be a part of the next edition of Microsoft Office EPM product.

The application creates critical path schedules which are very useful and save a lot of time for the project managers. Third-Party add-ons for critical chain and event chain methodology are also available.
Schedules can be leveled on the basis of resources, and chains can be visualized in a Gantt chart. Additionally, this wonderful software can recognize different classes of users.

The different classes of users can have differing access levels to projects, views, and other data. Custom objects and accessories such as calendars, views, tables, filters, and fields are stored in an enterprise global which can be shared by all users. Microsoft Project was the company's third Windows-based software application. Within two years of its introduction, WinProj became one of the most widely used project management software for the PC.

Although this software is branded as a member of the Microsoft Office family, it has never been included in any of the Office Suite Editions. The same will also be the case with Microsoft Office 2010. It is available currently in two editions, Standard and Professional. MS Project's proprietary file format is.MPP. The extension.MPP stands for Microsoft Project Proprietary.

Just like the other Microsoft Office editions, the Microsoft Office Project also came out in the years 1998, 2000, 2003, 2007 and the latest one still being in the beta stage, 2010. Project 98 did not have many features but was useful in the late nineties as the usage of the PC was less. Microsoft Project 2003, 2007 are the most widely used project management software in the market. Though Microsoft 2007 has many better features than that of Microsoft Project 2003, the latter has failed to thoroughly eradicate the former as it does not work very well in low configuration PC's.

Microsoft Project 2000 and 2003 had many shared features that formed a base for the integration of the project software. These features include maintaining constraints when uncompleted work is rescheduled, and select any reschedule date; keeping track of when a task finishes without constraining the project plan; consolidating and reporting project information in a variety of ways by using predefined groups or creating custom groups; Grouping on assignment fields in addition to tasks and resources, and rolling up time-phased data totals to group summary rows in Usage views; Grouping tasks and display graphical indicators together in the Network Diagram view.

There were many good features about Microsoft Project Standard 2003 that Project 98 and Project 2000 did not have. Some of these features are simplified setup process for project calendars and the ability to change working time; to get automatic, contextual suggestions alerting a person to scheduling options; to use Microsoft Office Online to get more training, better templates; to import task data from the Microsoft Outlook To-Do Bar to create a Project plan quite easily; to easily import and use data from Microsoft Office Excel to start a Project plan.

The above-mentioned features are of utmost importance to a project manager. This software does save a lot of time during the decision making process. It can also smoothly transfer any Project data to Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Microsoft Office Word, or Microsoft Office Visio regardless of the edition. The other top quality feature in this software are: to easily format and print any concise custom Project reports; to evaluate resource workload and availability using the Graphs button in the Assign Resources dialog box to identify the best resource available for the task; to control how a baseline data is rolled up to summary tasks to help ensure up-to-date tracking of projects and to prevent exceeding the deadline.

Microsoft Project 2007 is the best in terms of availability of options, tools and inbuilt plans. The old features have been integrated and some new features have been added on to Microsoft Office Project 2007. Some of the newly added-on features include showing prerequisites and resource constraints that drive the start date of the selected task. These drivers can be clicked by the user to link to the relevant information.

Cost Resources is a feature that is required by almost everyone. This helps enable users to define multiple named time-phased fixed costs on a task. These costs can then be grouped and reported as part of a cost type. Budget tracking is another great feature that has been added on to Microsoft Office 2007. A user can define a budget at a high level (program or project) so that funds can be allocated and costs, work, and materials against the budget can be tracked by the project manager. These features have ensured that Microsoft's Project software is the best in the market although it costs a little high.
