In this article, we will learn about Basic Knowledge of the World Wide Web.

What is  World Wide Web?

What is World Wide Web?

Let me explain it in more detail, the World Wide Web (www) is a proper system of all types of internet servers that are supporting main formatted and structured documents. All documents are cleanly formatted and structured markup language which is called HTML (HyperText Mark-Up Language) which is supporting links to other structured documents and graphics, Images, content, video and audio files. Now, you can clearly understand that you can directly jump from one document to another different documents simply by clicking on different hot spots.
There are many different applications which are called web browsers, for example, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera Mini, Internet Explorer, etc which makes it easy to access the WWW (World Wide Web). Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, are the most popular browsers which are being used by people.

The World Wide Web (WWW) is based on three different technologies:

  • HTTP – HyperText Transfer Protocol
  • HTML – HyperText Mark-Up Language
  • Web Browsers (As we discussed above) and Web Servers
Do you know how the original researchers of the World Wide Web were in the late 1980s and 1990s? Tim Berners – Lee took the whole responsibility for the development of the WWW (World Wide Web). He worked out in building prototypes of the above mentioned three web technologies and giving it the name “www”. Earlier, web sites were not getting attention but in mid of the 1990s, it got popularity.
Not a Synonym for the Internet – World Wide Web, this is a very important thing to note down. The WWW (World Wide Web) or you can say it “The Web” as people of the whole world call it, actually, it is a subset or sub-part of the internet. The World Wide Web consists of different pages that can be easily accessed using different web browsers.  All the information and data resides on the internet which is in actual is a network of networks. Let me tell you some examples which are part of the internet.
  1. FTP
  2. Telnet
  3. Internet Gaming (Online Gaming)
  4. IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
  5. E-mail
These mentioned things are the part of the internet but not part of the World Wide Web. The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) which we discussed above is the method or technique used to transfer Web pages to your personal computer or any other device. With a text which hyperlinked is a phrase or word contains a link to another website and all the different web pages are written in HyperText Mark up Language (HTML) which is working in conjunction with HTTP.
